Our Way of Saying
Things to do in Bangkok
Bangkok is a city that successfully blends ultramodern megamalls, steel and concrete skyscrapers, and hip dining and nightlife establishments with more traditional charms such as ornate golden temples, twisting canals and a buzzing street scene. After business is over, enjoy everything this vibrant city has to offer.
Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha
Visit one of the city’s most historic and sacred sites, and the cultural and spiritual heart of Thai culture. Within the Grand Palace (http://www.tourismthailand.org/Attraction/The-Grand-Palace--52), you will find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, lavishly decorated with glass mosaic and colourful porcelain.
Wat Arun (The Temple of the Dawn)
Wat Arun (www.watarun.net), built around both Hindu and Buddhist influences, is one of Bangkok’s best-known landmarks. It is the most visited and photographed temple in Bangkok – its towers glitter spectacularly in the sun during the day and are magnificent when lit up in the evening.
Chao Phraya River Cruise
See Bangkok from a different perspective on a relaxing cruise down the majestic Chao Phraya River. Nightly river cruises depart from the Saphan Taksin Pier and feature a traditional Thai dinner and live entertainment.
Named after Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal, the capital’s best green enclave was donated by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) in 1925. The park (http://www.tourismthailand.org/Attraction/Lumpini-Park--108) is at its most interesting during dawn and dusk, when its pagoda and lakes are circled by joggers, and surrounded by fitness enthusiasts performing aerobics or Tai Chi.
CentralWorld and Pratunam Market
Catch the BTS SkyTrain and check yourself in at CentralWorld (www.centralworld.co.th), a one-stop mall that houses trendy shops, a gourmet supermarket, a couple of department stores and even a skating rink. A few hundred metres away, Pratunam Market (www.pratunam-market-bangkok.com) and the multi-level malls that surround it seduce serious shoppers with locally designed ready-to-wear fashion and accessories.
Don’t go home without seeing the magnificent 46-metre, gold-plated Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho (www.watpho.com). The sprawling temple complex also houses depictions of over 1,000 other Buddha deities including nearly 400 bronze gods in the temple hall. Wat Pho is also the site of Bangkok’s oldest massage school – there’s no better place to experience an authentic Thai massage.
Make time to visit, Chinatown where you can immerse yourself in forgotten temples, narrow alleys, exotic markets and sidewalk restaurants peddling some of the best food in Bangkok. You can also shop for good-quality gold, Chinese herbs and trendy fashion trinkets.
